Sustainability is Our Claim

As an Austrian family business, we have been committed to uncompromising sustainability for over 30 years.

We are aware of our responsibility and always act according to the credo: Today's actions have a decisive impact on tomorrow - economically, ecologically and socially!

Our new biomass heating plant at Plant 3 in St. Martin was put into operation at the end of November 2023. The plant supplies a total of 2,000 kW of heating power with two boilers. This is sufficient to supply the entire site in St. Martin, including all further expansion stages, with heat.
By commissioning our own biomass heating plant, we are taking another step towards greater sustainability. This will replace the consumption of 200,000 m³ of natural gas with 100% biomass.

We pursue sustainable and environmentally friendly production. All three Biohort company buildings are equipped with photovoltaic systems (600 kWp/3,000 m²). The solar power we generate covers a third of our annual production electricity requirements. We also rely on heat recovery for our air compressors.

Our production does not generate any waste water or dust emissions and we completely refrain from using plastic films. The complete conversion of our company to lean management ensures minimal waste in all areas. During production, this means, among other things, no unnecessary energy consumption, minimal waste, virtually no idle time, and much more. In addition to lean management, this is also ensured by the use of state-of-the-art technology.

In-house transport is carried out 100% with electric vehicles. Many of our company cars are also already electric vehicles. Short delivery and transport routes ensure low CO2emissions. We source most of our raw materials from Austria and Germany and the products ordered are delivered directly to the customer - without detours or intermediate storage.

Our product packaging is made almost entirely from recyclable material and is designed to use as little as necessary to ensure the protection of the product during transport.

Steel as a raw material is 100% recyclable without any loss of quality and is also energy-efficient. All steel products can easily be melted down and reused. Steel can therefore be reused an infinite number of times. In addition, less energy is required to produce steel than any other metal.

Local suppliers: Biohort sources its raw materials exclusively from Europe and is therefore independent of the Far East.

Biohort Supports Honey Bees

Since June 2022, 8 beehives, each with between 40 and 80,000 yellow and black striped employees, have moved into their new place of work and residence at Plant 3 in St. Martin im Mühlkreis. The site behind the company premises is ideal for the bee colony, as it is usually sunny and sheltered from the wind, and the bees also experience a natural workplace there. As soon as the nights are permanently frost-free and the first really warm rays of sunshine appear, the Biohort bee colony behind the company building awakens to new life. The honey yield is largely dependent on the weather and the plants in the neighbourhood. In a very good honey year, around 30 - 40kg of honey can be harvested per hive. Our employees and partners are delighted with the sweet organic natural product.
